New research focus on service design
Earlier this year, we began work with the Arts & Humanities Research Council to look at design research in UK universities, and its connection with businesses and policymakers. Our aim was to identify future areas for research funding, and new and innovative ways of bringing research and industry together to contribute their ideas. We and the AHRC both believe that design plays a key role in economic and social value creation. Design is a strategic priority for the AHRC, and we support strong collaborations between research and industry, and the development of research that has a real world impact.
What we've done so far
Together we conducted a wide-ranging review of the landscape and the literature. We used face to face meetings, events and online participation to engage as widely as possible with the UK design research community, and with business, design industry and policymakers. After an initial broad sweep we focussed our attention on service design and innovation in services. You can read the findings of both of our scoping studies here…

What happens next?
The research is completed and is being used to inform the Research Councils’ decisions on future funding for design research. We will be keeping in touch with them and will update this webpage with any significant developments.
Thank you again to everyone in the design and academic worlds who has contributed to this work.
