Oliver Bedwell, Senior Designer, Dragon Rouge

How did you get your first break in design?

Off the back of my placement at Futurebrand, I got the opportunity to apply for a junior packaging designer role. In the interview I went up against three other lads from my course.

How long have you been in your current role?

I was at Futurebrand for two and a half years, during which time Sam Dumont left the company to join Dragon Rouge as well as my own design director. I followed him to Dragon, which at the time had a smaller packaging team. I've been in my current role for five years now.

What does it entail?

We do a real mix of mainstream consumer goods, food and confectionery. We also do a lot of premium spirits brands.

What has been the highlight/lowlight of your career so far?

I think the global redesign for Cruzan in 2007 was a highlight. It was a fantastic opportunity to take a brand and reinvent it in a more modern and compelling way.

The current recession has had a big impact overall, in terms of clients' expectations. It's made design agencies have to work harder, smarter and quicker to achieve the optimum results.

What is next for you as a designer?

Ideally to grow further into my role as a senior designer. I see myself staying at Dragon for quite a few years. I'd like to get more management experience and work more closely with my team.

What tips would you give to other designers to progress through the industry?

I think if you are able to find someone that you can aspire to, hold onto them and follow them if you can. More generally, make sure you keep up to date with current trends and maintain your portfolio.
