Putting design at the heart of the economy and public services means working with government departments and other agencies, and with business. It also means working with leading experts in design management, and of course with designers themselves.

Our history

Britain can make it posterThe Design Council started life in 1944 as the Council of Industrial Design. Over more than 60 years Britain has seen massive social, economic and technological change. We've changed too, though we've always fought to make design central to Britain's well being.

Design Council Review

In July 2010, David Willetts, Minister of State for Universities and Science, announced a review of the Design Council.

The Minister and Lord Bichard, the Design Council Chair, invited Martin Temple, CBE, a non-executive Director and Chairman of The 600 Group, and a member of the Design Council Board (from 2009), to lead the review, which considered the future role and status of the Design Council as the national strategic design body.
