£40k. 4 teams. 4 weeks.

Release date: 20 January 2011

Could your solution to bike theft benefit from a £10k kick-start?

Today sees the launch of a national search for designers to develop new ways of securing bicycles against theft from homes. Research shows that over the last eight years more than two thirds of bikes stolen have been from in or around the victim’s home.

The Residential Bike Theft Challenge, part of Design Out Crime, an initiative from the Home Office’s Design & Technology Alliance Against Crime and the Design Council, is looking to support designers to develop their solutions, by either developing a new idea or helping an existing solution get to market. The call to designers offers four winning teams a ten thousand pounds kick start fund for their work.

Designers who are interested in applying need to submit a short proposal by 2 February.

We will award up to four successful teams £10,000 each to develop their ideas over four weeks in March 2011.

You can contact Kathryn Jones to express your interest. We welcome all responses.

The project is part of the Design Out Crime project, an initiative funded by the Home Office’s Design and Technology Alliance Against Crime and run by the Design Council.

Design Out Crime is showing how designers can get to the root of a crime problem and stop it happening. Previous projects include tackling alcohol related crime and mobile phone theft.
