Release date: 7 March 2012
At MIPIM today Design Council Cabe announced the formation of the London Design Review panel. This move is in line with recommendations in the Bishop Review to set up a London Panel that will complete the network of Design Review panels, ensuring the availability of Design Review services to all local authorities across England.
Since April 2011 Design Council Cabe has carried out 182 reviews in the greater London area. This includes dedicated Design Review panels for major projects across the capital such as Crossrail, Thames Tideway Tunnel and the London 2012 Olympics.
The London Design Review panel will offer Design Reviews to London boroughs and potential planning applicants, and will also seek to provide on-going services as well as one-off reviews. Design Review forms part of a suite of services that Design Council Cabe will be delivering to both public and private sector clients.
To support these services Design Council Cabe is recruiting a network of Built Environment Experts (BEEs). The London Design Review panel will be drawn from this network. Design Council Cabe will also continue to review schemes of national significance on a thematic basis, such as major infrastructure projects.
Paul Finch, Chair of Design Council Cabe said:
‘I am delighted we’ve been able to launch our new services and ideas at MIPIM where the world of design meets the world of planning and development. The people here represent our current and future clients and customers’.

Notes to Editors:
- Design Council Cabe is an enterprising charity based on our values of supporting inclusive communities and promoting sustainable prosperity through the transformative power of design. Design Council Cabe is the successor to CABE, the Government’s advisor on Architecture and the Built Environment, which merged the Design Council in April 2011.
- The Bishop Review: The Future of Design in the Built Environment was a report to the Design Council by Peter Bishop in October 2011.
- Design Council Cabe is looking for a wide range of people from architecture, planning and infrastructure backgrounds as well as academics, health specialists, community engagement workers. Anyone, in fact, who can bring an informed expert viewpoint and is committed to helping us to champion good design.
In the past, we have drawn on the services of enablers and Design Review panel members to participate in our activities and provide guidance and advice. We are now refreshing our group of experts to form a single network of Built Environment Experts (BEEs).
This flexible and diverse network will provide design advice on our behalf to clients across England. This could be for a one off event such as reviewing a development proposal or supporting a client to develop a neighbourhood plan. Our clients are from the public, private and voluntary sectors.
The deadline for applications is 5.30pm Friday 30 March 2012. Design Council recognises the benefits of a diverse team; we promote equality and inclusion throughout our work. More details are here: www.designcouncil.org.uk/bee
