The challenge

Patients expect hospital to be clean and safe.

Good design can help make that happen by developing furniture and equipment that’s easy to clean and easy to use.

The response

The Department of Health, NHS Purchasing & Supply Agency and the Design Council spoke to frontline NHS staff to discover which hospital furniture and equipment would benefit from a redesign.

They recruited an Expert Reference Group including specialists from patient care, infection control, furniture manufacture, microbiology, product design and procurement to help develop a series of prototypes for the NHS.
