Why are we holding a summit?
The summit follows in the wake of the Chancellor’s Budget for Growth which seeks to encourage the production of world-leading products and services that are “Made in Britain, created in Britain, designed in Britain, invented in Britain”. Ahead of new government strategies on growth, innovation and localism, Design for Growth will look at what’s working, where more effort is needed and examine the respective roles of government, the private and third sector.
The 2011 Design Summit will explore how best to realise the potential of design to generate sustainable growth, identifying and augmenting policy initiatives that best exploit the UK’s design capabilities.
On June 23, 150 leaders from industry - together with relevant Ministers and their policy teams - will explore the themes manufacturing, the built environment, procurement and the design sector. The summit is being championed across government by David Willetts, the Minister of State for Universities and Science and is covened by Lord Bichard, whose career includes the leadership of government departments, local authorities, the University of the Arts and the Institute for Government. The sessions are led by Martin Temple CBE, the Chairman of the EEF, Paul Finch, Programme Director of the World Architecture Festival and Sir John Sorrell, Chairman of the London Design Festival and a UKTI Business Ambassador.
Thanks to the support of the Gatsby Foundation, we will be webcasting the event and creating a series of short films based on some of the summit case studies and content.
