Reviews and consultations

We have had repeated success in integrating design into national policies on innovation and economic competitiveness. Here are some examples:

Cox Review cover2005 - Cox Review of Creativity in Business

The Cox Review established the essential role that design has to play in linking creative ideas to innovative, competitive business. It also established the role that government can play in helping small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), the backbone of the UK economy, to use design to add value and innovate, and the review also led to the national roll-out of our business support programme Designing Demand.

2007 - Lord Sainsbury’s review, Race to the Top

This report highlighted the role design can play in getting scientific and technological breakthroughs to market. Following the success of our business mentoring programme, we were asked to develop a pilot mentoring scheme for technology transfer offices in universities.

2008 - Innovation Nation

The Innovation Nation white paper examined innovation within the public sector. It initiated the launch of our Public Services by Design programme offering design mentoring for public sector managers.

We have also pioneered a series of rapid, low-cost open-innovation projects for government departments. These projects have tackled issues such as crime, healthcare acquired infections and patient dignity in hospitals, issues where innovative solutions were proving hard to find.

2011: Design for Innovation

Design for Innovation front cover"Design can help organisations transform their performance, from business product innovation, to the commercialisation of science and the delivery of public services. That is why design forms an integral part of the Government’s plans for innovation and growth and features strongly in our Innovation and Research Strategy for Growth. The UK has the potential to succeed globally but to do so we must harness our strengths. Design is undoubtedly an area where we are amongst the best in the world, with potential to do even better.” Rt Hon David Willetts MP, Minister for Universities and Science

To coincide with the Government’s Innovation and Research Strategy for Growth we've published our own set of facts, figures and practical plans for growth. The purpose of this design plan is to bring the design elements of the Innovation and Research Strategy together in one place and to communicate these as widely as possible across design, industry, government and education. Our aim is to provide a useful strategic framework for organisations, institutions and individual businesses with an interest in making design-led innovation happen on the ground.

We've also created a set of films about design for growth that you can watch on-demand.

2011: National Planning Policy Framework

‘Our standards of design can be so much higher. We are a nation renowned worldwide for creative excellence, yet, at home confidence in development itself has been eroded by the too frequent experience of mediocrity’. Rt Hon Greg Clark, Minister for Decentralisation and Cities

As the UK’s national strategic body and a government advisor for design in the built environment, Design Council Cabe welcomes the reform of the planning system to create a simplified, more inclusive process.

Budget 2011

"Made in Britain, Created in Britain, Designed in Britain, Invented in Britain". Chancellor George Osborne sets out a fiscally neutral budget ‘to fuel growth’ in the face of weakening UK economic performance. The Plan for Growth, published alongside Budget 2011, will focus on tax, start ups, investment, exports, and the workforce.

How can designers help the government's Spending Challenge?

The government is looking for ways to reduce the budget deficit by cutting public spending in a way that is fair and responsible. It's Spending Challenge is asking us all to share ideas about how to cut public spending. Whether the ideas are small-scale or radical, they'll be considered as part of the Spending Review 2010, which will be concluded on October 20th. The Design Council has submitted it's ideas for design-led solutions to reduce the deficit and it encourages the design industry to submit it's ideas for design and innovation solutions to the deficit.
