Independence Matters

Independence Matters is a joint collaboration between the Technology Strategy Board and Design Council to support the development of great consumer services for later life.  

Through the programme we've funded seven start up enterprises who have used design-led approaches to develop innovative services that help older adults live well and stay independent. Find out more about the three different programmes of work, including a design challenge for secondary schools and the two business challenges: Keeping Connected and Home & Away.

Join us for tea and cake as we look back on the last 18 months of Independence Matters and celebrate the designers, businesses and people we’ve supported through the programme. It's your chance to find out about the seven start-ups helping older people stay independent.

We asked teams of designers, industry partners, service providers and third-sector organisations to propose how they would tackle problems associated with mobility and nutrition, in people aged 65-plus.

Keeping Connected Schools Challenge

Our schools challenge looked at designing ways to improve quality of life for older people by being more connected with people of other generations, with their family or carers and with other communities.
