Design Industry Research 2010

In autumn 2009 the Design Council conducted its second comprehensive survey of the UK design industry.

The survey, published in March 2010, covered 2,200 design businesses including in-house design teams, design consultancies and freelance designers working across communications, digital & multimedia, interior & exhibition, product & industrial, fashion and service design disciplines. Design businesses were asked about the profile and size of their businesses, their clients and the competition they face, their business practices and the education, training and skills of their employees.

Heated debate

On 26 March we hosted a debate at the Royal Society of Arts for senior creatives and design business managers to discuss the research.

Topics up for debate included:

  • Are recessions good news in disguise for designers?
  • Has the downturn forced designers to value their networks?
  • Is on-the-job learning better than no learning at all?

Digital design specialist Simon Waterfall was compere for the morning and speakers locking horns were: furniture designer Tom Dixon; creative industries number cruncher Mandy Merron; design business advisor Shan Preddy; retail design specialist Callum Lumsden; and graphics grandees Mike Dempsey and Brian Webb.
