How CABE evaluates quality in architecture and urban design

Guidance on how CABE evaluates schemes, from site planning through to the final project, considering procurement and the role of the planning system.

A building project matters to everyone who comes into contact with it or who is affected by it. This is a group much larger than the building’s users. Failure to recognise this may result in a design that is ‘fit for purpose’ as the client sees it, but inadequate as a piece of urban design or a piece of architecture.

Design review explains how CABE’s design review panel of industry experts assesses good design in architecture, urban design and public space.

It provides guidance on how schemes are evaluated, from site planning through to the final project, and considers such issues as procurement and the role of the planning system.

First published in 2001, this second edition reflects both the popularity of the original publication and changes in legislation. It builds on existing guidance by drawing on CABE's experience in reviewing schemes across England.
