BIAD (Birmingham Institute of Art and Design)

Birmingham Institute of Art and Design (BIAD) is a centre for art, design and media education. It offers a portfolio of preparatory certificates and diplomas as well as undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. BIAD is also home to a range of externally funded projects and services which provide research support and industrial and commercial collaboration.

BIAD Business works with industry, professions, and the community through a range of specialist services. These include:

  • Design Knowledge Network, which exists to help small and medium-sized enterprises in the West Midlands providing free consultancy and support services to improve design, product development and marketing.
  • The Jewellery Industry Innovation Centre (JIIC), which was established to assist jewellery firms throughout the UK to assess and evaluate potential new technology applications and equipment. The JIIC also facilitates technology transfer and provides technical support and training in the use and application of these new technologies and equipment.
  • Knowledge Transfer Partnership, a government-funded scheme that helps UK companies take advantage of the expertise available within universities.
  • Media Content Lab, a joint venture established by Birmingham City University and its partners, Maverick TV and Birmingham City Library, with support from the European Regional Development Fund.
  • Media Skills, an industry led training facility that offers a variety of professional media related courses.
  • OpenAdvantage, which aims to promote awareness of Open Source technologies together with developing a regional Open Source support network.
  • User-Lab, a non-profit making organisation that undertakes academic and commercial research.
