The TTOs report the strategic advice and design projects have helped each technology project in a different way. Outcomes include:
- license deals secured and over £1,000,000 of fresh investment accessed
- a reduction in the risk taken by the TTO. 80% of projects report a reduction in risk
- increased IP value. 50% of projects say they have increased the value of their intellectual property by working with designers
- accelerated time to market. 30% of projects report they have got closer to market quicker by working with designers
Universities also report improved design capability and now include design in their business plans and processes. They have also seen how design can help reduce costs by stopping projects without a commercial opportunity.
The journey from lab to market is a difficult one with many projects caught in no man’s land – too far developed for further research funding, but still under-developed to get the market interested. Through the Innovate for Universities programme we have shown that strategic and tactical design delivery can help bridge this gap, by packaging intellectual property into attractive propositions for the market to take on.
If we can encourage our scientists and designers to work together in this way we can help boost innovation on the UK and make sure we utilise the assets residing in our university labs for economic and publicvalue.
