Michael Westley

Areas of Expertise

For CABESpace/ Design Council, Michael developed ‘Spaceshaper’ co-design tool, delivering training in UK and Australia, and contributed to (DCLG) ‘Inclusive Design Hub’. Michael serves on Cornwall Design Review, and NHS Design Review Panels. Michael’s current projects include: ‘Edison Project’, (HEIF Award) autism research facility, Plymouth 2021), ‘Sutton Bank (Interpretation/Play landscape)’ (North-York-Moors National Park, 2017), ‘Play 4 Life2’ (therapeutic landscape for the Royal Cornwall Hospital Trust, 2021).

At Plymouth University Michael leads Postgraduate module ‘Connecting Sustainable Practice’ and Undergraduate ‘Infrastructure & Wellbeing’ Studio, involving ‘live’ clients/ issues, including ‘Future Parks Accelerator Plymouth’, (2020/21). He is ‘Enterprise’ lead for School of Architecture. Michael’s recent research/ publication includes contributions to: ‘Rewilding education…’ (Children's Geographies 2019), “Everyday Green Space and Experienced Wellbeing…” (Landscape Research/Routledge 2016), ‘Design for Healing Spaces, Therapeutic Gardens’ (Timber Press 2015), “Public Health & Landscape, Creating Healthy Places” (Landscape Institute 2014). Michael’s previous appointments include: Principal- Groundwork Plymouth, Programme Manager- Sensory Trust. He has taught at Rhode Island School of Design, Falmouth, Cambridge, Essex and Glasgow Universities.
