Roland Karthaus
Senior Programme Manager
As a Senior Programme Manager, Roland leads on projects within the Place team. An architect, educator and researcher with a wide breadth of experience, Roland has passionate belief in design as a collaborative endeavour capable of solving the biggest societal challenges.
Roland brings experience and expertise in urban design, architecture and research from being a Director of Matter Architecture and Associate Professor at the University of East London. He has delivered a wide range of types and scales of building and public realm projects and is a High Streets Task Force Expert. In 2018 he led a team that won an RIBA Presidents Medal for Research on prison design.
Roland has worked both for and within local government on major regeneration projects and has published innovative research on how housing can improve health and wellbeing through intergenerational design. Working with Ealing Council, he led a strategy for the Borough’s Older Adults Accommodation that applied this research through an innovative health and care-led commissioning approach. He has also led and participated in urban design workshops around the world including Russia, China, India and Europe.
As well as a qualified architect, Roland holds a Masters in Cities, Design and Regeneration. He enjoys spending time with his family and cycling long distances around the UK.
