Professor Elena Marco
Professor Elena Marco is Pro Vice-Chancellor and Head of the College of Arts, Technology, and Environment at the University of the West of England (UWE), Bristol. An internationally recognised leader in architecture, sustainability, and higher education, Elena is known for driving transformational change, fostering inclusive leadership, and championing student success. Passionate about equity, she actively advocates for the advancement of women and Black, Asian, and global majority groups in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM).
With over 25 years of experience in higher education and professional practice, Elena began her career as an architect at Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios following her studies at Universidad Politécnica de Catalunya. Her academic and industry expertise has shaped the transformation of the built and natural environment professions, particularly through strategic non-executive appointments that address global challenges such as climate change, diversity, and sustainability.
Since 2022, she has led UWE’s largest College, overseeing 40% of the University’s academic and research portfolio, with over 18,000 students and 800 staff. Her leadership has driven organisational transformation, enhanced education and research excellence, and strengthened industry partnerships.
Beyond UWE, Elena serves on multiple advisory boards and professional bodies, shaping policy and practice in education, architecture, and sustainability. A sought-after speaker and thought leader, she regularly contributes to national and international forums, influencing the future of the built environment and higher education.
