Rachel Jones

Rachel is a highly experienced leader in design and innovation who helps organisations turn new technologies into products. Recently Design Director at Ford’s human-centred design studio, Rachel oversaw multiple innovation projects that created connected services, developed urban mobility systems, and delivered new energy services. Previously, Rachel led Kraken’s (Octopus Energy) new product group, where she was responsible for over 20 innovation projects in energy flexibility systems such as vehicle-to-grid and demand-side response. Rachel led Hitachi’s Co-creation Centre in Europe and was responsible for engaging C-level executives from other organizations in co-creation activities. She also led projects in energy systems, behaviour change, and IoT. Prior to joining Hitachi, Rachel founded a digital research and innovation agency with clients that included Microsoft, Vodafone, Nokia, BBC, Oxfam, and Proctor & Gamble. Rachel led the strategic direction for Innovate UK on key emerging technology initiatives, including the Internet of Things, Future Cities, and Digital Health. Rachel previously worked for Xerox EuroPARC and Sapient. She has a PhD in Computer Science, numerous patents, and over 30 international publications. Rachel was an External Examiner for IDE at the RCA for four years and is on the steering board of Loughborough Design School. Outside of work, Rachel can be seen at a pottery wheel or sailing a dinghy.
