Four ways that government can make better use of design to increase R&D

Four ways that government can make better use of design to increase R&D

4 November 2020

We were pleased to see references to design in the recently published Research and Development (R&D) Roadmap that sets out the UK’s vision and ambitions for science, research and innovation. As the roadmap implies, there is no one way to increase investment in R&D, but our evidence tells us that design is often a key yet overlooked ingredient and plays a major role in innovation.

Design Council has a long-standing interest in the role design can play in programmes that enable greater use of design, such as Designing Demand that worked with businesses, as well as our Innovate for Universities and Design in the Public Sector programmes. We have also delivered extensive research into how design can enable greater innovation and productivity and encourage investment in R&D, including our Design Economy research and Understanding Design-Intensive Innovation report.
