Skills for Planet

Upskilling one million designers in green design skills by 2030.

Design shapes the world around us, and right now, it’s shaping our future.

We need the right skills to harness the power of design for good, shifting systems to imagine new ways of being, reducing emissions, pollution and waste and helping the natural world to flourish.

We are on a bold mission to equip designers with the green design skills needed to build a future that’s regenerative, resilient and inclusive for all.

Our vision is that ‘green design’ becomes so interwoven into design practice that it simply becomes part of what we mean by ‘good design’.

Working with leaders across education and industry, our aim is to embed green design into everyday design practice. This calls for a systemic change in design education, practice, and policy.

Key findings from our research show that there is critical need to close the green design skills gap:

66 %
of the UK’s designers designed for planet during 2024.

43 %
of designers think they have the skills to meet the demand for environmental design.

71 %
of designers think the demand for environmental design is going to grow.

What are the Green Design Skills?

We have created a Skills for Planet Blueprint to map out the critical green skills that all designers need to be able to put green design into practice, providing a shared language that will make cross-sector conversations and skills-building possible.

Join the mission.

To achieve the mission, we need to ignite a movement. We need to move beyond the status quo and use design to actively benefit the planet.

From the classroom to the C-Suite, if you are an educator or organisation who could help with the upskilling mission we’d love to hear from you.
